ムンバイ（旧ボンベイ）はインドの西海岸にある人口密度の高い都市で、金融センターとしても知られるインド最大の都市である。私は旅行中としては珍しく、迷子になってしまいホテルに戻れなくなってしまった（当初スマホが無かった）。その時、目の前に遊んでいる兄妹がいた。私は海岸（海に出れば方角が分かるから）まで連れて行ってくれたら一人2ドルあげるよと持ちかけた。それに乗ってくれた子供たちは道なき道、工事現場、配管道などおそらく近道と思われる通路を案内してくれた。まるで「トトロ」だった。途中、私に「本当に2ドルくれるの？」と確かめる初心な眼差しと声のトーンは今も忘れられない。

Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is a densely populated city on the west coast of India, and is the largest city in India, also known as a financial center. Unusually for me while traveling, I got lost and couldn't get back to the hotel. At that time, I saw my brother and sister playing in front of me. I offered them $2 per person if they would take me to the beach (I could get my bearings by going out to sea). The children who rode it guided us through what were probably shortcuts, such as off-road roads, construction sites, and plumbing paths. It was like "Totoro". I'll never forget the innocent look in his eyes as he asked me, "Are you really going to give me two dollars?"
