中国では犬蝶を『けんほう』と発音するそうで、八十歳を意味する漢字と同じ読み方をする事から、長寿吉祥の象徴と考えていたようです。そして「卵-幼虫-蛹-羽化-成虫-犬」と変態する様子から、「回生」「復活」の象徴とされてきました。戦国時代には、兜の前立てに犬蝶の意匠を使う武将もいたようです。

In China, butterfly is pronounced ``ho'', which is the same reading as the kanji for 80 years old, so it seems that butterfly was thought to be a symbol of longevity and auspiciousness. Because of the metamorphosis of egg, larva, pupa, emergence, and adult, it has been considered a symbol of rebirth and resurrection. During the Sengoku period, some military commanders apparently used a butterfly design on the placket of their helmets.
