フランスの画家ジャン・デュビュッフェが1945年に精神障害者の作品をアール・ブリュット（生の芸術、フランス語: art brut）と呼んで認知された。精神の深淵の衝動が生のままむき出しに表出され、美しい造形に対する反文化的な造形だと定義される。全ての物理法則や形、色、概念、全てを無視してはいないが並外れた想像力や妄想そして桁外れの集中力を要する絵となる。

French painter Jean Dubuffet gained recognition in 1945 when he called the works of mentally disabled people art brut (art of life, French: art brut). Although he does not ignore all the laws of physics, shapes, colors, and concepts, he creates paintings with extraordinary imagination, delusion, and extraordinary concentration.
