釈迦の生母はマーヤー（摩耶）夫人。釈迦族の王・シュットーダナ（浄飯）の妃です。ある日の事、天から白象が降りてきて、自分の右わきから胎内に入る夢を見て懐妊したのだといいます。摩耶夫人が見た夢は「世界中の人々を救う偉大な王子が生まれる」というお告げだったのだそうです。仏教国のタイでは、象を神聖化して、中でも白い象は釈迦の化身とされています。

Buddha's birth mother was Mrs. Maya. She is the wife of Shutthodana, the king of the Shakya tribe. One day, she dreamed that a white elephant came down from heaven and entered her womb from her right side, and she became pregnant. It is said that Lady Maya had a dream that told her that a great prince would be born who would save people all over the world. In Thailand, a Buddhist country, elephants are sacred, and the white elephant is said to be the incarnation of Buddha.
